Disney+ is Coming to Microsoft Store on Windows on October 5th

Sometimes the most welcome surprises can emerge from the most unlikely of places. Earlier today, when Microsoft rolled out its event for the Microsoft Surface, one of those surprises cropped up. For anyone who’s been waiting for Disney+ to add a native app to Windows, you’re in luck.

During the event, alert viewers caught a point in one of the introductory videos. Specifically, the video featuring the Surface Laptop Studio.

Advance to the 1:47 mark and you’ll see for yourself, Surface tablet user watching “What If…?” However, it’s the subtitle that should catch the most attention. Under the happy video-watcher, the text reads: “Disney+ coming October 5 to the Microsoft Store on Windows.”

That by itself is worth noting, and the Windows 11 reveal only drove the point home. The Disney+ app for the Windows Store was also shown during the original Windows 11 announcement in June. However, they never said whether it was a native app for Windows or using the new Android emulation feature coming to the platform.

Regardless of how it’s happening, Disney+ making a move to a new platform should be welcome. Opening up the potential for new markets will give Disney+ extra reach in the market and potentially convert new subscribers. Disney+ has already been available on Xbox since June, so simplifying that connection even further could be a small coup for Disney+. The service is currently available for Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, Roku, Android TV, iPhone/iPad, Android Phone/Tablet, Mac, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, LG Smart TV, Samsung Smart TV, Sony Smart TV, and VIZIO Smart TV

It should prove exciting to see where Microsoft and Disney+ go with this. With the streaming market getting increasingly competitive, any edge is an edge worth pursuing.

Steve Anderson got his start writing about direct to video movies almost 15 years ago. This was back in a time when video stores were a part of everyday life, as opposed to being roadside attractions like gator farms or the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota. With that writing on the wall in huge day-glo capital letters and probably moving neon, Steve migrated to streaming, which was clearly the future of home entertainment. Steve has been an enthusiastic proponent of the home theater for years, however, and seeing streaming's growth has proven gratifying as a way to fill the video store's shoes.
