Hulu Renews 2 Animated Comedies: ‘Solar Opposites,’ ‘Crossing Swords’

Fern Siegel

Hulu has renewed “Solar Opposites” for a third season and “Crossing Swords” for a second.

The animated comedies will get 12- and 10-episode renewals, respectively.

“Solar Opposites” is the brainchild of Justin Roiland (“Rick & Morty”) and Mike McMahan, who was also associated with the show. “Solar” is about four aliens who land in suburban America after their home planet explodes.

The quartet can’t decide whether Earth is terrific or terrible. When not debating the pros and cons, they are busy protecting Pupa, a super computer that one day will consume them and transform the Earth.

The cast includes Roiland, Sean Giambrone, Thomas Middleditch and Mary Mack.

“Crossing Swords” was created by Tom Root and John Harvatine IV (“Robot Chicken”). The show centers on Patrick, who becomes a squire at a castle that houses crooks, oversexed royals and corruption. All the characters, including Patrick, Princess Blossom and the King and Queen, are brightly colored pegs.

Root writes and executive produces; Harvatine directs and executive produces.

The show is voiced by Nicholas Hoult, Adam Ray, Tara Strong, Tony Hale, Luke Evans, Seth Green, Alanna Ubach, Adam Pally, Yvette Nicole Brown, Maya Erskine, Breckin Meyer and Wendi McLendon-Covey.

Separately, Hulu just debuted “Love, Victor,” the spinoff series about a gay 17-year-old. The series is based on the 2018 film “Love, Simon,” which was directed by Greg Berlanti, best known for writing-producing “Dawson’s Creek” and “Riverdale.”

The streamer also announced the eight-episode “Dopestick,” starring Michael Keaton as a doctor caught up in America’s opioid epidemic. The series is slated for a 2021 debut.
