Peacock Picks Michael Lesslie to Oversee Latest Reboot of ‘Battlestar Galactica’

“Battlestar Galactica” is getting another reboot — on Peacock — courtesy of Michael Lesslie (“The Little Drummer Girls,” “Macbeth”). Lesslie will do triple duty as creator, writer and executive producer.

The project was initially announced in January. Sam Esmail (“Mr. Robot,” “Homecoming”) is guiding the effort, part of his deal with NBCU. The show is produced by Esmail Corp and NBCU’s Universal Content Productions.

Deadline first reported the news.

The Peacock version will be the latest iteration of the sci-fi show. ABC ran the original in 1978, banking on the “Star Wars” phenomenon. It ran for a season and a sequel, “Galactica 1980,” lasted 10 episodes. A reboot ran on the Sci-Fi Channel from 2004-2009.

This version, according to an Esmail tweet, will “explore a new story within the mythology while staying true to the spirit of Battlestar.”

The original “Battlestar” story concerned humans facing extinction after wars with the Cylons, a robot race that destroyed the Twelve Colonies. The remaining humans remain in one battleship group, secured by the Galactica, as they search for the fabled Earth.

Lesslie told Deadline: “As a lifelong devotee, I know that the possibilities of ’Battlestar Galactica’s’ world are infinite and that each iteration has raised the bar for epic and intelligent sci-fi storytelling.”
