Pluto TV Reaches 18 Million Monthly Actives, After Launching 28 New Channels & Latino Streaming Service

As part of Viacom’s Q3 Earnings Call today, the company revealed that Pluto TV, the free ad-supported streaming service they acquired in January, is now being using by 18 million users every month, up 50% on the year. This boost is from the 16 million they announced in May, and 12 million active users when they acquired the company for $340 million in January.

The company is hoping to aggressively expand the growth of the service, which competes with services like Tubi, Xumo, and Sinclair-owned STIRR. To do that, they have expanded the distribution of the service to millions of additional devices through partnerships with Comcast — on their Xfinity X1 and Flex platform, and Charter — through their Contour Platform.

In comparison, Tubi announced that they had reached 20 million monthly actives in May, while Xumo surpassed 5.5 million monthly actives in April. STIRR, which was launched by Sinclair earlier this year, just announced they had reached 1 million downloads.

Part of the growth comes from the addition of 28 new networks on the service. Last week, they added new channels that will offer classic shows such as MTV Cribs, Wild n’ Out and also give you a chance to watch past VMAs, Comedy Central Roasts as well as Ridiculousness. In May, the free ad-supported streaming service, launched 14 linear channels with classic content from Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon.

In July, Pluto TV announced the launch of Pluto TV Latino, a new category on the platform featuring 11 linear Spanish and Portuguese-language channels. While the service first debuted in the U.S., it is expected to be expand to Latin America in 2020. Pluto TV is already available internationally in UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, but the company has major international expansion plans.
