Report: Plex Working on Subscription Channel Ad-Ons and Deep-Linking Features

Plex — a streaming app that allows users to stream movies, TV shows, news, web shows, podcasts, music, live and recorded television and personal media —announced the launch of their own streaming service in December. At launch, the free, ad-supported service included dozens of movies and shows from studios like MGM, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, Lionsgate and Legendary.

Now, according to TechCrunch, the platform has new features on deck to make viewing easier for users. For one, Plex plans on adding subscription channel ad-ons — similar to The Roku Channel and Amazon Prime — so customers can subscribe through their platform to access premium content.

Plex also plans on launching a deep-linking feature for services such as Netflix that don’t allow other platforms to stream their content. Through “deep linking,” users are able to “search for and discover shows and movies from within Plex, then play them wherever they were available,” TechCrunch reported. For content that’s not available via subscription services, the company will have a transactional marketplace that would let users rent or buy movies or shows they want to watch.

Plex is available in more than 200 countries to anyone with a free Plex account. Unlike its competitors — The Roku Channel, Tubi, Crackle and Vudu’s Movies on Us — Plex has structured its deals in order to stream content outside the U.S., TechCrunch reported, making it the largest ad-supported video service in terms of reach.

Plex is available for download on all major smart TVs and streaming boxes — Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV boxes, as well as iOS and Android devices.
