Smart TVs Are The Fastest Growing Segment of Streaming Devices

While streaming devices like Roku and Fire TV are still the largest segment of streaming devices — Smart TVs are on the rise. According to a presentation from ComScore at The Pay TV Show, Smart TVs have grown 23% since last year. In comparison, streaming devices grew 9% in the last year, with gaming consoles like Xbox and PS4 increasing 8% in the same period.

Overall, streaming households has nearly 63 million households (+7% y-o-y), up from 50 million in 2017 and nearly 60 million in 2018. It does not come as a surprise that more and more families are choosing Smart TVs as their streaming device as choice. With improvements of interfaces, either through their own development, or implementation of Roku OS, Android, and Fire OS — it has become much easier to enjoy your streaming services without an additional device.

Just last month, Roku announced that one-in-three Smart TVs sold in the U.S. in 2019 include Roku OS, which includes a nearly identical interface to their streaming players like Roku. Earlier this year, Apple announced partnerships with Samsung, VIZIO, and LG to bring AirPlay2, Home Kit, and their new TV App to their platforms. Even Live TV Streaming Services — like fuboTV, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV, and YouTube TV have developed apps for Samsung and LG devices.
