T-Mobile TV Streaming Service May Be Announced August 15th

During T-Mobile’s 2nd Quarter earnings call, T-Mobile CEO John Legere shared that their next Uncarrier event will be on August 15th. At previous events, they’ve announced free Netflix, their T-Mobile One plan, and including international data at no extra charge.

Many are speculating that the upcoming event will be to announce a new Live TV Streaming Service powered by their acquisition late last year of Layer3.

The Layer3 service is currently being tested in Chicago, Dallas, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles.

In those markets, the TV service includes ~150 channels including locals, regional sports networks, and major cable channels for $75 a month with no contract.

There has been little information of what will be included with Layer3 TV Streaming Service. While some say it will be similar to a traditional vMVPD like Hulu Live TV, others say it will be closer to FIOS TV powered by a private IP network.

This means that Layer3 can control your bandwidth directly, so you wouldn’t experience the same buffering that you would expect with a traditional streaming service.

We assume that it’s going to be somewhere in the middle. In the future, if you can receive T-Mobile 5G, you will receive the full Layer3 experience — but anyone would be able to use the streaming service directly over the internet.
