With the launch of HBO Max, WarnerMedia added to the already confusing number of ways to access HBO content. Before launch, those that got cable through HBO could access content using HBO Go. However, those who bought it directly from HBO (or a streaming provider like Hulu) could access it via HBO NOW.
With the launch of HBO Max, most subscribers could also access both HBO content and the new “Max” content like “Friends” and Max Originals like “Love Life” through the new HBO Max App.
In order to simply the experience, WarnerMedia announced today that going forward there will be simply two apps: HBO and HBO Max. HBO Go will be officially sunsetted on July 31st, while HBO Now will be referred to as “HBO”.

HBO will be based on HBO NOW and will allow those who do not have access to “Max” content or on platforms like Fire TV and Roku (which doesn’t support the HBO Max App)

HBO Max will handle all direct subscribers and those who have access to “Max” content through their cable or streaming subscription.
Most customers who get HBO NOW through App Store (Apple TV Channels), Google Play or streaming services like Hulu and YouTube TV get HBO Max at no additional charge.
If you have HBO GO through DirecTV, AT&T, Comcast Charter, Verizon, Cox, Altice, or your NCTC cable company, you can access HBO Max for the same price you were paying for HBO.
Currently, those who get HBO through Amazon Prime Video and The Roku Channel do not get access to HBO Max. Those companies have yet to reach an agreement with AT&T for the additional “Max” content. You can continue to stream HBO content.
