Disney Plus Greenlights 4 Nonfiction Shows

Disney+ has given the go-ahead for four new series, including a remake of the fantasy-reality competition show “The Quest.” The streamer has also committed to “The Maze,” in which participants have to solve riddles, NatGeo’s “Meet the Chimps,” and a docuseries that follows Pixar’s SparkShorts show.

The projects were announced today during a Disney+ panel at the Realscreen Summit in New Orleans.

“The Quest,” filmed in an Austrian castle, takes place in the fantasy world of Everealm. Teen contestants encounter mystical beings and magical encounters on their adventures, which rival their favorite books, games and movies. The series is from the executive producers behind “The Lord of the Rings,” “Queer Eye” and “The Amazing Race.”

“Maze” is also from the “Amazing Race” executive producers behind “The Quest.” Five teams, comprised of one adult and one teen, decipher clues on their journey through European cities and fairytale villages.

The six-part “Meet the Chimps” takes viewers to one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Chimp Haven is a 200-acre refuge in Louisiana that houses more than 300 chimpanzees. The show is a mix of nature and documentary filmmaking.

The untitled Pixar series from Supper Club (“Chef’s Table”) will follow Pixar’s inventive SparkShorts program, which lets a few Pixar staffers create their own animated films.

“These projects take people on epic adventures, immerse them in fantastical worlds and shine a light on extraordinary people and creatures, which are all important benchmarks of our Disney+ nonfiction content philosophy,” said Agnes Chu, senior vice president, content, Disney+.

Disney+ is the dedicated streaming home for movies and shows from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, “Star Wars” and National Geographic.

The streamer launched November 12, boosted by the “Star Wars” franchise “The Mandalorian.” Credit Suisse predicted the streamer would have 20 million subscribers by the end of 2019.
