Netflix Tops Streaming Choices During Pandemic, New Survey Finds

A new survey by Morning Consult has been tracking streaming use since COVID-19 forced Americans inside. To date, it found Netflix has outpaced its rivals as the streamer of choice by a considerable margin: 35 percent.

Trailing behind, “something else” comes in at 12 percent, Hulu at 10 percent and Amazon Prime Video at 9 percent.

Two other revealing stats: 38 percent of adults who subscribed to a streaming service this year cited coronavirus as a reason, while 16 percent said they were likely to subscribe to HBO Max when it launches. Ten percent said the same of Peacock and Quibi.

The latter is telling because huge sums have been spent on upcoming streamers, particularly Quibi. The Jeffrey Katzenberg brainchild has raised $1.75 billion in funding.

Quibi, HBO Max and Peacock — are set to launch April 6, May and July 15 (nationally). But at the moment, the Morning Consult poll doesn’t show users subscribing to the services. A majority said they were unlikely to purchase WarnerMedia’s HBO Max (57 percent), Peacock (60 percent) or Quibi (59 percent).

Morning Consult/The Hollywood Reporter surveyed 2,200 U.S. adults March 27-29.
