Baseball Returns Thursday, But Streaming is Complicated

The drastically shortened and delayed 2020 Major League Baseball season begins Thursday night for some teams, but watching without a paid TV deal will be more complicated than in years past.

If you want to watch your team locally, you’ll need a live TV streaming service – you can’t use MLB.TV. Additionally, PlayStation Vue is no longer, and Sling TV & fuboTV dropped all Fox Sports RSNs & the YES Network.

YouTube TV no longer carries YES, FSW, and others in select secondary markets.

The TL;DR

  • If your team is on a Sinclair-owned Fox Sports RSN, your best bet is Hulu + Live TV ($55). The service also carries NBC Sports RSNs, YES Network, and Marquee Sports Network.
  • You can try it with a 7-Day Free Trial.

However, if you’re a fan of the following teams, you’ll need a different service:

Do you live out-of-market?

If you live away from your local team, you can still use available for $50 for a single team or $60 for every team (and free with T-Mobile).

In addition to the struggle of finding live game coverage on streaming services, DAZN has canceled its MLB whiparound show “ChangeUp,” while ESPN+ will bring back its daily game this season.

Peacock Pivots Tokyo Content

While the 2020 Tokyo Olympics were supposed to be a tour de force for Peacock, the new streaming service from NBCUniversal, the company has found a way to promote its Olympics content a year out from the rescheduled Games.

The TL;DR

  • Peacock was set to stream the 2020 Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as three daily Olympics shows, and the Paralympics.
  • With the one-year postponement, the new streamer has launched a “Road to Tokyo” hub with round-the-clock classic and new programming.
  • Peacock had already expanded its sports footprint with a deal to stream 175 Premier League matches starting next season.

In an announcement Wednesday, the service revealed the launch of its first pop-up channel, titled “Road to Tokyo.” The hub is dedicated to round-the-clock streaming of Olympic and Paralympic classic moments, documentaries and studio programming.

Peacock Garners 1.5 Million Downloads in First Six Days After National Launch

It seems Peacock is off to a good start, as the streaming service managed to lure in watchers with its national launch. A report by app store intelligence firm Sensor Tower revealed the service amassed 1.5 million app downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the U.S. within its first six days post-launch.

That number is 25 percent more than the 1.2 million downloads Disney+ received within the same time.
