Verizon Shuts Down Go90 Streaming Service

Verizon announced today that it will be shuttering its Go90 ad-supported video streaming service on July 31.

The announcement does not come as much of a surprise. Back in February, at Recode’s Code Conference, Oath CEO Tim Armstrong said that they had planned to redistribute Go90 content to other Oath sites like HuffPost, AOL, and Yahoo!.

In a statement to Variety, Verizon stated:

“Following the creation of Oath, Go90 will be discontinued. Verizon will focus on building its digital-first brands at scale in sports, finance, news and entertainment for today’s mobile consumers and tomorrow’s 5G applications.”

Most of the content for Go90 had come from AwesomenessTV, Complex Networks, Vice Media, and Endemol Shine North America. Their most popular content included Top Grier from social-media star Hayes Greer, @tagged from AwesomenessTV, and QB: Beyond the Lights from Peter Berg.

The service’s most critical success was its Oscar win for Kobe Bryant’s animated short film Dear Basketball.

Given that other carriers have accelerated their entertainment ambitions — AT&T & Time Warner and T-Mobile & Layer3 — it will be interesting to see what Verizon does to compete on that front.
