AT&T Announces CEO Randall Stephenson's Retirement, COO John Stankey to Assume Position on July 1

The executive team at AT&T is once again getting another stir. According to Deadline, the company announced during their shareholder’s meeting today that CEO Randall Stephenson will be retiring and current COO John Stankey will take over the position effective July 1.

“Leadership succession is one of the Board’s most important responsibilities,” stated AT&T director Beth Mooney. “After an extensive evaluation, it was clear that John Stankey was the right person to lead AT&T into the future.”

Although he relinquishes his position in July, Stephenson — who served the company as chairman-CEO for the past 13 years — will still serve as executive chairman of the Board of Directors until January to make transitioning easier.

Stankey, has served as president and COO since October 2019, following the retirement of John Donovan, former CEO of AT&T Communications.

“Stankey joined AT&T in 1985 and has more than 30 years of leadership across AT&T’s business, from corporate strategy and technology, to operations and media and entertainment,” Deadline stated.

Stankey has previously taken on varying leadership roles, including CEO of WarnerMedia, CEO of AT&T Entertainment Group, chief strategy officer, chief technology officer, CEO of AT&T Operations and CEO of AT&T Business Solutions.

Recently, WarnerMedia also snagged former Hulu and Amazon executive Jason Kilar as their new CEO, effective May 1.
