CuriosityStream Drops Subscription Price, Offers Free Ad-Supported Option

CuriosityStream announced this morning that they had dropped the price of their science documentary streaming service from $5.99 to $2.99 a month for HD and from $11.99 to $9.99 for 4K.

This matches the price that the service was made available as an add-on to YouTube TV last month.

CuriosityStream is a streaming service started by Discovery founder John Hendricks which includes 1,700 on demand science, technology and nature documentary and features. The service is available on Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, iOS, Android, Web, and Xbox One.

The move comes as reports of slower than expected subscriber growth. While in 2015 the company projected 5-7 million subscribers in the first few years, reports have pegged the service at only having 1 million. The company hope that the price drop will help them reach 1.5-2 million subscribers by the end of the year.

The company is also launching an ad-supported product called CuriosityStream Showcase. Viewers will be able to watch some CuriosityStream content by watching an unstoppable 15-second pre-roll ad and branding around the video.
