Forecast: Netflix, Disney Plus Will Win Big in SVOD Subscriptions

Global SVOD subscriptions are on a solid upward trajectory.

A new report from Digital TV Research forecasts digital pay TV growth rocketing from 380 million subscribers in 2010 to 1.06 billion by 2025. Global SVOD subscriptions will increase by 519 million between 2019 and 2025.

Specifically, analysts say Disney+ and Netflix will be the big winners on the SVOD front. Disney+ will add 176 million subscribers during these years to total 202 million. (It currently has 54.5 million subscribers now.)

By 2025, Netflix, the most established platform, is expected to have 258 million subscribers; Amazon Prime Video will grab 141 million and Apple TV+ will gain the smallest slice, 14 million.

Based on forecasts for 138 countries, the research firm believes pay IPTV will reach 319 subscribers in five years.

However, one of the biggest global markets, China, is not expected to stream any foreign platforms.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, noted what all studies have shown: “A major impact of lockdown has been a steep rise in SVOD subscriptions.”

Also, SVOD’s share of OTT revenues will hold steady at around 58 percent. This means that SVOD revenues will climb by $50 billion between 2019 and 2025 to total $98 billion.
