HBO Max Secures Another Win With U.S. Streaming Rights For Japanese Animation House, Studio Ghibli

And another one’s in the bag for HBO Max, which just announced that they have secured the U.S. streaming rights for Japan’s Studio Ghibli. The landmark deal for the twenty-one Studio Ghibli feature films marks the first time these beloved films have been licensed to a streaming platform.

Premiering when the service launches in 2020 will be the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Ponyo, Castle in the Sky, The Tale of The Princess Kaguya and more.

“Studio Ghibli films are visually breathtaking, completely immersive experiences,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, and truTV. “Exciting, enchanting, and deeply humanistic, these wonderful films have captured people’s hearts around the world, and we are proud to showcase them in an accessible way for even more fans through HBO Max.”

HBO Max has been buffing up on their content, both animated or otherwise. The streamer came out on top, securing exclusive streaming rights to The Big Bang Theory, which like Studio Ghibli content, was never available on any other streaming platform prior. HBO Max also signed a five-year deal to become the streaming home for Sesame Street, making the show’s entire 50-year library available for the first time.
