How to Stream ‘Star Wars’ Movies Online for Free Before Going to Theaters to See ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

Stephanie Sengwe

Disney launches yet another installment of the “Star Wars” franchise just in time for the holidays. The latest addition, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” hits theaters on Dec. 20 and sees Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron face the First Order in the final battle. However, before you go watch “The Rise of Skywalker” in theaters, there’s no better time to screen the movie’s predecessors, and — even better — you can do so for free.

Recent installments such as “Rogue One” and “The Force Awakens,” as well as classics such as “A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” are currently available for free with a 7-Day Free Trial of Disney+.

“The Last Jedi” and “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” which are on Netflix, currently aren’t available on Disney+.

Disney+ launched on November 12th at $6.99 a month, nearly half the price of Netflix ($12.99). The service includes four simultaneous streams, unlimited downloads, 4K streaming across a range of devices, including Roku, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, iOS, Android and Web.

The streaming service has a deep catalog, including the entire Disney Vault, Pixar and Star Wars libraries, MCU films like “Captain Marvel” and the entire 30 seasons of The Simpsons.

Starting with the 2019 theatrical slate, all Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars films will become exclusive to Disney+, meaning that “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will be available to stream on the service in the middle of next year.

About ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, preceded by “The Force Awakens” (2015) and “The Last Jedi” (2017). It is also the final episode of the nine-part “Skywalker saga.” The film takes place one year after the events of “The Last Jedi” and sees the surviving Resistance face the First Order once more as Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron’s journey continues. The trio boots up for the final battle with the power and knowledge of generations behind them.

Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac reprise their roles as Rey, Finn and Poe Dameron. Mark Hamill, Adam Driver and Lupita Nyong’o are also some of the big names reprising their previous roles. The late Carrie Fisher also appears in the film as Princess Leia through the use of unreleased footage from “The Force Awakens” and “The Last Jedi.”

The film is produced by Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions. Abrams also served as director and co-writer of the film.
