Netflix Surpasses 61 Million U.S., 100 Million International Subscribers in Q4 2019 Earnings Report

Netflix announced today that they reached 167 million global subscribers in their Q4 2019 earnings report. The figure represents a 20 percent increase from last year. The company, which is switching to reporting numbers regionally, added that they had 61 million U.S. subscribers (up 420,000) and surpassed 100 million internationally for the first time (up 8.33 million).

“We have a big headstart in streaming and will work to build on that by focusing on the same thing we have focused on for the past 22 years — pleasing members,” Netflix stated in the shareholder letter. “We believe if we do that well, Netflix will continue to prosper. As an example, in Q4, despite the big debut of Disney+ and the launch of Apple TV+, our viewing per membership grew both globally and in the U.S. on a year over year basis, consistent with recent quarters.”

This is the first earnings report from Netflix since the launch of Disney+ and Apple TV+ last November. Disney+ has proven itself to be a formidable competitor, garnering 10 million subscribers 24-hours post-launch and is projected to reach 25 million subscribers by the end of the first quarter.

Nonetheless, Netflix is still huge in comparison to the other streaming services out there. In November, Disney announced that Hulu has 29 million subscribers in the U.S., while Amazon announced that they had 100 million Prime subscribers, but according to a report by Reuters, only 26 million U.S. customers stream videos on Prime Video.

With recent price hikes, removal of popular content and the upcoming launches of HBO Max and NBCUniversal’s Peacock, Netflix is facing stiffer competition than ever before.
