Quibi’s download numbers are rising. On Thursday, Sensor Tower reported the mobile streamer had hit 830,000 by day three. In its first 24-hours, it was dowloaded over 300,000 times.
That’s good news for founder Jeffrey Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman, who have raised $1.75 billion in funding to produce the short-form streamer.
In addition, its 90-day free-trial strategy may be working. Quibi, short for “quick bites,” is also free to T-Mobile wireless users on multiline plans for a year.
Quibi shows include “Survive,” starring Sophie Turner and Corey Hawkins, “Most Dangerous Game,” starring Liam Hemsworth and Christoph Waltz, reality show “Thanks a Million” with Jennifer Lopez and home-renovation comedy “Flipped” starring Will Forte and Kaitlin Olson.
As of April 9, Quibi was the 20th most-popular free app in the App Store and sixth on Google Play, per Sensor Tower.
Also, Quibi has launched the trailer for the rideshare drama “The Stranger,” created, written and directed by Veena Sud (“The Killing.”) The tension-provoking show is scheduled for an April 13 release.
“The Stranger” stars Maika Monroe (“The Guest,” “It Follows”) as a rideshare driver and Dane DeHaan (“The Amazing Spider-Man 2”) as her creepy passenger. He claims he has just committed a murder and promises to kill her too — unless she can tell him a “great story.”
After the free-trial period ends, Quibi will run $4.99 per month with ads and $7.99 per month without ads.
