‘Warrior Nun,’ a New Series Based on a Manga-Style Comic Book, Makes Its Debut on Netflix

Netflix debuts the first season of the 10-episode live-action series “Warrior Nun” today.

The show is about 19-year-old Ava (Alba Baptista), who wakes up in a morgue with a divine artifact in her back. She is recruited into an ancient order of nuns who war against demons in the cosmic battle between heaven and hell. Kristina Tonteri-Young will play Sister Beatrice, the group’s mastermind.

Other cast members include Tristán Ulloa (“Cocaine Coast), Lorena Andrea (“No Man’s Land”), Toya Turner (“Chicago Med”), Olivia Delcan (“Drug Squad: Costa del Sol”) and Thekla Reuten (“Red Sparrow”).

The series is based on the manga-style comic “Warrior Nun Areala” by Ben Dunn. The comic book revolved around Sister Shannon Masters, a Warrior Nun of the magical Order of the Cruciform Sword, a fictional branch of the Roman Catholic Church.

Simon Barry is the showrunner for the Netflix adaptation. He created Syfy’s “Continuum” and produced Syfy’s “Van Helsing.”

“Warrior Nun” was filmed in the spring and summer of 2019 in the south of Spain.

Netflix has successfully developed other comic books into series, such as “Jessica Jones” and “The Umbrella Academy.”
