Quibi has a new promotion to attract viewers to the mobile platform. Initial episodes of three original series — “Most Dangerous Game,” “The Stranger” and “Dummy” — are free to watch on Quibi's YouTube channel.
The first two are thrillers; the third is an off-kilter comedy.
Viewing is available in horizontal or vertical mode, but there is no switching between the two, which is doable on the Quibi app. Also this month, some viewers may get the technical ability to view the streaming from their connected TVs; that’s a work in progress.
The YouTube move is an important lure for potential viewers, since the 90-day free trial expired. Starting today, new sign-ups to Quibi get only two free weeks of viewing.
Quibi’s specialty is short-form shows, airing 10 minutes or less. It runs $5/month with ads and $8/month ad-free. To date, the streamer reports it has been downloaded 2.7 million times since its April 6 launch.
Since its debut, the streamer has come under fire for privacy violations. A new study by analytics consulting firm Victory Medium said the company inappropriately shared users’ email addresses with third-party advertising and tracking companies. Eko — an interactive-video company — also filed an injunction before Quibi’s launch, claiming patent infringement over its Turnstyle feature.
