BREAKING NEWS: After Introducing New Bundles, fuboTV Raises Base Package by $10 a Month

Fubo has quietly increased the price of the base Fubo plan to $55 a month (was $45). The Live TV Streaming Service, which started as a sports-focused streaming service, includes 75+ channels from A&E, AMC, Turner, NBCU, Fox, Discovery/Scripps and announced the addition of Viacom channels last month.

The move comes after introducing three new bundles earlier this week — Family, Entertainment, and Ultra — which include extra streams, additional DVR storage, and premium channels. The Entertainment and Ultra bundles have seen a $5 increase, while the Family bundle remains at $60.

While it is not available today, we have also heard rumors that a new $50 tier — with possibly a smaller set of channels — may be introduced in the future. But for now, for those looking to subscribe to Fubo, your best bet is likely the Family bundle ($60) which adds Cloud DVR Plus (500 Hours) and Family Share (3 Simultaneous Streams) for just $5 more than the base plan.

Unfortunately, the price hike will also affect existing subscribers. Fubo is expected to send an email to existing subscribers informing them of the price increase, with the hike coming on their next billing cycle.

When asked for comment, Fubo shared the following statement with The Streamable:

“With the addition of popular channels over the past year, including AMC, Cartoon Network, CNN, TBS, TNT and, soon to come, BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount Network, TV Land, VH1 and more, plus dozens of other national and regional channels, fuboTV is re-pricing its base subscription package, fubo, to $54.99.

Starting March 28, new customers who sign-up for fubo at this price will receive a $10 discount on the first month. We are committed to continuing to deliver the best of live TV to our customers, as well as an exceptional user experience with 4K streams and premium features.”

Third Price Increase Since Fall 2017

This is the third price hike and the largest by Fubo. In September 2017, when they added MSG/MSG+, they raised pricing from $34.99 to $39.99 in most markets and $44.99 in New York metro area. Then, in February 2018, they updated pricing to $44.99 in all markets.

Since the last hike though, they’ve added nearly 20 channels including those from AMC, Turner, and Viacom — which is rumored to launch by the end of next month. As part of the deal, BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount Network, TV Land, and VH1 will be added to the base Fubo plan ($55). With the new channels, Fubo will have 28 of the Top 35 cable channels — the most of any of the Live TV Streaming Services.

The company has also been the only service to add 4K streaming — which has included The World Cup, Premier League, MLB, and College Basketball & Football. They are also the only service with AT&T SportsNet Southwest in Houston, and the cheapest option for MSG/MSG+ in New York.

Price Hikes Happening Across Streaming Services

This has been a year of price increases by Live TV Streaming Services with the fattening of bundles and increasing of content costs.

Last March, YouTube TV increased their pricing from $35 to $40 a month, but grandfathered existing users at their current price. A few months later, Sling TV raised the price of their Sling Orange plan from $20 to $25, while PlayStation Vue increased all plans by $5 a month — starting at $45.

In February, after adding networks from Discovery, Hulu Live TV increased the price of their service from $40 to $45. And last month, DIRECTV NOW, discontinued their existing plans — launching 2 new plans starting at $50 a month (up from $40), without channels from A&E, AMC, Viacom, and Discovery.

What to Expect Next?

As they did with the last price hike, it’s expected that the higher price will help the company support a larger content bundle — maybe even missing channels like ESPN/ABC.

We have heard that there are multiple product enhancements on the horizon, including support for Smart TVs, better personalization throughout the interface, as well as a much needed upgraded Cloud DVR with support for series recording and better management of recordings.

The company is also expected to expand their coverage of 4K events to additional sports and even non-sports content as it becomes available.
