Netflix Original Content Continues Driving Huge Numbers, with ‘Unbelievable’ and ‘Stranger Things’ Leading The Way

Netflix may have had slower than projected growth in their third quarter, but that did not take away from the fact that viewers are still drawn to its original content. The streaming service reported that original content on the platform still garnered millions of viewership.

Stranger Things which debuted in July, had its most watched season to date with 64m member households streaming in the first four weeks. Another hit, Unbelievable was seen by 32m member households in the first 28 days.

In comparison, last quarter Dead to Me, the dramedy starring Christina Applegate, was watched by 30 million households in its first four weeks, while limited series, When They See Us, based on the Central Park Five case, was watched by 25 million households in its first four weeks.

The company has also seen success with original films. Secret Obsession starring Brenda Song saw 40 million households stream in the first four weeks, while Otherhood and Tall Girl with Ava Michelle saw 29 million and 41 million households stream the films respectively.

In comparison, last quarter Always Be My Maybe and The Perfect Date were viewed by 32 million and 48 million viewers respectively.

The fourth quarter will see the debut of many big-budget films on the service. Martin Scorsese’s ​The Irishman​ (with Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci), ​Marriage Story​ (starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver) and ​The Two Popes​ (featuring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce), all of which have emerged as early Oscar frontrunners.

The company also has major releases such as Dolemite is My Name​ (starring Eddie Murphy and featuring a breakout performance from ​Da’Vine Joy Randolph​), ​6 Underground​ (directed by Michael Bay and starring Ryan Reynolds), ​The Laundromat​, from director Steven Soderbergh and starring Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman and​ ​The King​ ​(starring ​Timothée Chalamet, Lily-Rose Depp and Joel Edgerton) as well as animated features​ ​Klaus​ and ​I Lost My Body.​
