Over 20 Million Households Watched Netflix’s FYRE Festival Documentary

Costner and Affleck films see over 40 million subscribers streaming in first month

In their letter to shareholders for the First Quarter 2019, Netflix announced that they’ve reached nearly 150 million subscribers and surpassed 60 million in the U.S. alone. The reach has given some surprising viewership numbers — including that of their FYRE Festival documentary.

Netflix shared that 20 million households watched FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened in its first month. The documentary that follows the failed luxury music festival founded by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule, had a competing film from Hulu that came out the same week. In comparison, Hulu as a whole has 23 million paid subscribers.

One of their most recent shows, Our Planet which is similar to BBC’s Planet Earth – is projected to have over 25 million households watch the series in the first month of release. But one of their biggest successes was their premiere of Umbrella Academy which saw 45 million streaming households in its first four weeks of service.

In January, the company shared that 80 million member households streamed Sandra Bullock feature film Bird Box, with 45 million in the first seven days. The company continues to see momentum with Kevin Costner/Woody Harrelson’s The Highwayman and Ben Affleck’s film Triple Frontier reaching 40 million and 52 million member households in their first month respectively.
