Sling TV Remains at 2.4 Million Subscribers, Still is Largest Live TV Streaming Service

Dish Network announced their 2019 1st Quarter results today, and shared that Sling TV added just 7K net subscribers this quarter. The Live TV Streaming Service now has 2.424 million subscribers, up from 2.417 million at the end of 2018.

Sling TV is no longer able to offset a large decline in Dish satellite subscribers. The company lost more than 261K satellite subscribers this quarter. The company has been in a a months long carriage dispute with HBO, after settling with Univision earlier this year.

Sling TV is still the largest vMVPD, ahead of DIRECTV NOW who lost another 83,000 subscribers this quarter leaving them with just 1.5 million. Hulu Live TV announced in September that they had reached 1 million subscribers, but some have speculated that they are closing in on 2 million subscribers. YouTube TV has never disclosed subscribers, but reports place them at 1 million, PlayStation Vue at 400,000, and fuboTV at 250,000.

In February, Hulu Live TV, after adding networks from Discovery, increased the price of their service from $40 to $45. Soon after, Fubo, after adding Viacom channels, raised the price of their service from $45 to $55 a month. In March, DIRECTV NOW introduced two new plans — PLUS ($50) and MAX ($70), while discontinuing their more compelling legacy plans. Last Month, YouTube TV added Discovery/Scripps but increased their subscription from $40 to $50 a month.

The company has been actively trying to recruit customers leaving services due to rising prices. Besides adding Discovery channels in December, Sling TV has been discounting the service to just $15 a month (40%) for new subscribers since mid-March. While some of this is reflected in the current user numbers, the promotion has continued into May (and last for users first three months) — which would see subscribers still on the promotion into the 3rd Quarter.
