“Artemis Fowl” Skips Theaters, Will Stream Exclusively on Disney+ Starting June 12th

The global pandemic has caused media companies to shift their release schedule. Disney has already pushed “Mulan”, “Black Widow” — and moved up the release of “Frozen II” and Pixar’s “Onward” on Disney+. Now that it doesn’t look like theaters will re-open anytime soon, Disney’s new live-action film “Artemis Fowl” will stream exclusively on Disney+ beginning Friday, June 12.

The film was originally supposed to open in theaters on May 29th, after being pushed from its original release of August 9th last year. The movie based on the eight fantasy novels written by Eoin Colfer, follows “12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his mysteriously disappeared father, and in doing so, uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies.”

The movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, stars Colin Farrell, Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Judi Dench, and Josh Gad.

Branagh said, “Artemis Fowl is a true original. In challenging times, a twelve year old criminal mastermind is one heck of a travelling companion. Smart, funny, and cool as mustard, he’ll take you to new worlds, meet unforgettable characters, and mix magic with mayhem. His own family is everything to him, and (although he’d never admit it), he’d be as proud as I am that families around the world will now be able to enjoy his first amazing screen adventures together, on Disney+.”

This isn’t the only major motion picture going straight to streaming. Last month, Universal shifted their theatrical release of “Trolls: World Tour” direct to digital rental on April 10th — the same day it was set to be released in theaters.
