CBS All Access Added to Apple TV Channels, Supports Live Streaming CBS

After speculation last week that CBS All Access would be coming to Apple TV Channels, the streaming service arrived on the platform today. Unlike when purchasing directly from CBS, Apple TV Channels only offers the ad-free version for $9.99 a month. Just like other services available for subscription by Apple, shows will be available to download offline. If you don’t mind ads, you can still subscribe to CBS All Access for $5.99 on the CBS website.

One nice feature is that Apple TV Channels integrates the live stream of your local CBS affiliate — which is good if you lost it as part of AT&T’s carriage dispute with CBS. When you subscribe, your local affiliate will appear directly in Apple TV’s App for you to stream what’s airing live including local news, college football, NFL, and PGA Golf.

In addition to your local CBS station, you will be able to watch CBS shows on-demand (ad-free), as well as CBS All Access originals like Star Trek: Discovery, The Good Fight, and The Twilight Zone. Before you subscribe, most of the first two episodes are available for free in the Apple TV App.

CBS All Access has aggressively added new original content especially around the Star Trek universe. The company recently started their second season of Star Trek: Discovery and will be adding an animated series called Star Trek: Lower Decks, as well as one featuring Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard and another with Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh. After the success of its first season, the service recently renewed digital remake of The Twilight Zone with Jordan Peele for a second season.

On yesterday’s Third Quarter 2019 Conference Call, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that since Apple updated their TV App in May, monthly viewership is up 40% year-over-year. Part of that growth is attributed to the introduction of Apple TV Channels, which allows Apple TV users to subscribe and view OTT services directly from the App.

Apple TV Channels integrates with 15+ services: HBO, Showtime, STARZ, Cinemax, Epix, Smithsonian Channel Plus, PBS Living, Acorn TV, Sundance Now, Lifetime Movie Club, Urban Movie Channel, Tastemade, CuriosityStream, MTV Hits, and Comedy Central Now.
