Crunchyroll Sets a Record, Boasts 3 Million Paid Subscribers Globally

Fern Siegel

Crunchyroll has reached a milestone.

The anime brand, which offers more than 1,000 titles and 30,000 episodes, says it has hit 3 million paid subscribers globally and over 70 million registered users.

The AVOD debuted in 2006 as an online streamer for American anime and manga fans; it hit 1 million subscribers in 2016. Since then, its viewership has skyrocketed.

Joanne Waage, GM, Crunchyroll, stated: “Our goal has always been to grow the love of anime globally, and these numbers show our labor of love is paying off — and this is just the beginning.”

A part of Otter Media, a WarnerMedia company, Crunchyroll acquired a majority stake in VIZ Media Europe Group in late 2019, adding Anime Digital Network, Anime on Demand, DVD and manga publisher KAZÉ, and live-action content distributor Eye See Movies to its streaming library.

The company also announced eight new shows in February. They span the adventure-fantasy-historical fiction genres. These shows are produced with noted publishers, including Kodansha, and animation studios, such as MAPPA.

Plus, it has branched out to ecommerce, debuting more than 20 Crunchyroll Loves collections, the brand’s in-house streetwear line.

Crunchyroll currently curates the Crunchyroll hub on HBO Max, bringing select fan-favorite titles to the platform each quarter.

Crunchyroll is available free with ads, ad-free subscriptions run $6.95/month, or bundled with VRV for $9.99. VRV bundle includes Crunchyroll, Rooster Teeth, Nick, Shudder, Boomerang and Curiosity Stream.
