Netflix Boards Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans and Russo Brothers for Most Expensive Film to Date

While the pandemic has been a time for reflection and restrategizing for most businesses, it seems Netflix has been looking for ways to grow bigger. According to Deadline, the streaming giant just announced their most “financially ambitious feature film” with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans serving as front men while Anthony and Joe Russo man the production behind-the-scenes. The goal for Netflix is to “create a new franchise with a James Bond-level of scale and a budget upwards of $200 million,” Deadline said.

Titled “The Gray Man,” the film is based on a 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney. It was adapted for the screen by Joe Russo, with some assistance from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film chronicles a “deadly duel between killers as Gentry (Gosling) is hunted across the globe by Lloyd Hansen (Evans), a former cohort of Gentry’s at the CIA,” Deadline noted. Gosling is expected to head multiple installments of the franchise. Production for the film is slated to begin in January.

“The intention is for it to be competitive with any theatrical and the ability to do with with Gosling and Evans is a dream for us. The idea is to create a franchise and build out a whole universe, with Ryan at the center of it,” Joe Russo told Deadline.

“We have all committed to the first movie and that’s got to be great to get us to the second movie … We have a great working relationship with Netflix, and we go back almost 20 years with Scott Stuber. We formed AGBO to be an agnostic storytelling company, where we figure out the best platform. We think Netflix is the perfect place for this film.”

The news comes a day after Netflix announced yet another quarter of growth. In their Q2 earnings report on Thursday, the streaming giant revealed they reached nearly 193 million global subscribers, up 10 million from the nearly 183 million global subscribers they hit in Q1 2020.

The company also announced that Ted Sarandos was promoted to co-CEO of Netflix, along with Reed Hastings
