REPORT: Apple Plans to Premiere Original Films in Theaters Before Streaming Them on Apple TV+

It seems Apple is also vying for some spots at future award shows. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is looking to debut its original feature films in theaters for weeks before they start streaming on Apple TV+. This model follows that of Amazon Prime, which slated some of its movies such as “Late Night” starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson for theatrical release in the past.

Though, Apple has focused on a hoard of original series for the streaming service, they also have more than a handful of feature films lined up for Apple TV+. According to Wall Street Journal they have enlisted former Imax head of entertainment Greg Foster, who left Imax last fall after 18 years, as a consultant for theatrical-release strategy.

The subject of streaming service’s eligibility for major awards has been quite contentious. Reports came out in the past stating that legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg was planning to put up a fight against streaming movies being eligible for the Academy Awards, saying that Netflix films should only be eligible for the Emmy Awards.

In April, the DOJ had to get involved when potential rule changes that would ban streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu from winning an Oscar were on the table. In a letter obtained by Variety, DOJ’s Antitrust Division wrote to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences saying that banning streaming services “may raise antitrust concerns.”

Apple TV+ is set to launch Nov. 1 for $4.99/month — but the service will be free for a year to customers who purchase an Apple device.
