Hulu + Live TV Matches Sling TV With 2.7 Million Subscribers, While YouTube TV Reaches 1.6 Million Subs, Analyst Says

Last week, Sling TV announced that they had reached 2.69 Million subscribers — and now it appears they are neck and neck with Hulu Live TV to claim the largest Live TV Streaming Service.

According to MoffettNathanson’s Q3 Cord-Cutting Report, Hulu Live TV added 400K subscribers in the third quarter to reach ~2.7 million subscribers. The report also suggests gains for YouTube TV, which has seen the service reach 1.6 million subscribers, after adding 200K subs in the third quarter.

Overall, all the major vMVPDs, including fuboTV and PlayStation Vue (which has announced it is shutting down) added 529K subscribers this past quarter. The company struggling the most is AT&T TV NOW, which lost 195,000 subscribers in the third quarter, dropping the service to just 1.1 million subscribers.

Collectively, vMVPDs have nearly 9 million subscribers according to MoffettNathanson’s estimates. This is up 33% from the 6.7 million Live TV Streaming Services during the third quarter last year. The question is, with continued price hikes on the horizon, at what point will customers either switch back to cable, or more importantly forgo live TV completely.
