In an upcoming film for Netflix, Taylor Swift will document the final show of her Reputation tour on New Year’s Eve at 12 a.m.
Swift announced the release in honor of her 29th birthday on Twitter. The stadium tour, which was the highest selling tour in U.S. history, has featured guest stars including Camila Cabello and Charli XCX. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Netflix film will feature some of these stars, along with pyrotechnics, fireworks, and a 63-foot cobra.
The trailer begins with a Swift voiceover, saying “When she fell, she fell apart. When she finally rose, she rose slowly,” as the camera pans over screaming crowds in black and white. In the video, we get a taste of what makes it into the film, a dancing Taylor wearing black sparkly leotards and dancing, and throwbacks to the old Taylor sitting at the piano.
It remains to be seen whether casual Taylor Swift fans will tune in to the concert, although loyal Swifties almost certainly will, if only to see guest stars that they missed at their own concerts. Netflix hasn’t said how much they paid for the concert, but we know that they’ve spent at least $8 million on content this year.
Concerts on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video
“Reputation” will join a host of other offerings somewhere between concert footage and documentaries on Netflix. “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” “Justin Timberlake + The Tennessee Kids,” and “Hans Zimmer: Live in Prague” are all concerts available to stream through Netflix. The streaming service has also consistently added musician documentaries that feature significant concert footage along with insight into the artists, like “Gaga: Five Foot Two,” and “How the Beatles Changed the World.”
Although Netflix leads the concert documentary genre on streaming services, Amazon has attempted to get into the game by acquiring documentaries about Kiss and Coldplay, and adding older shows from Led Zeppelin and The Who. So far, Hulu Live TV only has NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar: Live” as a musical offering.
So where will you be on New Year’s Eve? Popping bottles of champagne at home and ringing in the new year watching the concert seems like a great way to ring in the new year.
