Amazon Renews ‘The Boys,’ Elisabeth Moss to Star in ‘Shining Girls’ at Apple TV Plus

Amazon Prime Video has renewed the singular superhero series “The Boys” for a third season. Season 2 kicks off September 4, launching with three episodes, then weekly until the October 9 finale. Per Amazon for the upcoming season: “The Boys are on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought.” The show is based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and developed by Eric Kripke, who serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the series.

Other notable streamer deals include:

  • Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaiden’s Tale”) will star and executive produce a series adaptation of “Shining Girls” at Apple TV+. The show is based on the Lauren Beukes novel. Moss plays a Chicago reporter who is assaulted, then hunts down her attacker. Leonardo DiCaprio will also executive produce through his production company, Appian Way. Moss’ upcoming film roles include “The French Dispatch” from Wes Anderson and “Next Goal Wins” by Taika Waititi.

  • Netflix has bought an untitled action-adventure film that will star Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”). It will be directed by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum”). Reynolds and Levy previously teamed on the upcoming action-comedy “Free Guy,” and both will produce the upcoming movie. Reynolds also starred in the streamer’s “6 Underground.”

  • Amazon Studios hopes to acquire worldwide rights to the film “Without Remorse” starring Michael B. Jordan as John Clark, head of a global counter-terrorist unit. Author Tom Clancy called Clark the “dark side” of his protagonist Jack Ryan. “Without Remorse” was directed by Stefano Sollima (“Sicario: Day of the Soldado”).

  • Netflix has also renewed the coming-of-age drama “Outer Banks” for a second season. The show debuted in April and soared to No. 1 on the streamer’s Top 10 list shortly after. The full cast will return, and season two opens in the Bahamas.

  • The popular ”Sweet Magnolias” has been renewed for a second season at Netflix. JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott and Heather Headley star as a trio of lifelong best friends who depend on each other, personally and professionally.
