Apple TV+ Reportedly Paying $25 Million for Billie Eilish Documentary

Fern Siegel

Singer Billie Eilish is having a banner year. A documentary about the teen’s musical rise, directed by R.J. Cutler, will premiere in 2020 on Apple TV+.

The Hollywood Reporter says that Apple TV+ is paying a $25 million price tag. The doc’s budget is pegged at $1 million to $2 million.

The project focuses on six-time Grammy nominee Eilish, 17, and chronicles her life after her first album, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” was released in March. The doc records her private family life and behind-the-scene moments of her tours and public events.

Eilish, named Apple Music’s artist of the year, headlined the streamer’s first Apple Music Awards on Wednesday. Her premiere album, written with her brother, Finneas, was the most-played album on Apple Music and Spotify this year.

Cutler is known for his work on “The War Room,” “Nashville and “A Perfect Candidate.”

Eilish also released a kid’s clothing line this year. She grew up wearing “boys” clothes as a youngster, saying she was frustrated with traditional gender fashion choices.

The singer gained a cult following in 2016, with her single “Ocean Eyes” on SoundCloud, later released on Interscope Records. She’s best known for her 2019 single “Bad Guy,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Her music combines alternative pop, electro pop and alternative rock.

Other Apple TV+ unscripted films expected next year include shows from Oprah Winfrey, such as “Toxic Labor.”
