Cartoon Network and Crunchyroll Team Up to Return Toonami to Latin American Markets

Cartoon Network and Crunchyroll are teaming up to bring the anime block, Toonami, back to Latin American viewers. According to Multichannel, the block begins showing from Monday through Friday from midnight to 1 a.m. starting on Aug. 31. Toonami will feature series such as “Dragon Ball Super” and “Mob Psycho 100,” with each show dubbed into Spanish and Portuguese.

“The team at Cartoon Network have been incredible partners in helping us grow the love of anime around and their Toonami block has been the premiere television destination for the anime community,” said Brady McCollum, head of global operations and international, Crunchyroll. “By powering Toonami’s return to Latin America with series curated by Crunchyroll, we can’t wait to create even more fans of the medium we love.”

Cartoon Network and Crunchyroll, which are both subsidiaries of AT&T, are also joining forces to create an original series titled “Fena: Pirate Princess,” which is slated to debut in 2021, Mutichannel reports. Crunchyroll and Adult Swim are also creating “Blade Runner: Black Lotus” together.

Last week, reports came out that AT&T was in currently in talks to sell Crunchyroll to Sony.

While Sony would be the perfect company to acquire the streamer because they already have their footprint in the niche market with Funimation — which they acquired in 2017 — sources say they are staggered by the $1.5 billion price tag AT&T’s WarnerMedia has placed for Crunchyroll as “the price is well above recent values for other niche streaming services.”

As the anime world grows more and more popular, Crunchyroll has become a bigger platform. In July, the streamer reported they hit three million paid subscribers globally, with over 70 million registered users garnered.
