Disney Plus Hits 60.5 Million Subscribers, 100 Million Subscriptions Across Disney+, Hulu, & ESPN+ in Q3 2020

Disney+ has reached 60.5 million subscribers as of August 3rd, having reached 57.5 million subscribers at the end of the Third Quarter in June 2020.

That’s up 6 million subscribers from the 54.5 million the company reported on May 4 in their Q2 2020 earnings call.

“Despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, we’ve continued to build on the incredible success of Disney+ as we grow our global direct-to-consumer businesses,” Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company, said.

With Hulu reaching 35.5 million subscribers and ESPN+ 8.5 million, Chapek says that “direct-to-consumer services now exceeds an astounding 100 million paid subscriptions — a significant milestone and a reaffirmation of our DTC strategy, which we view as key to the future growth of our company.”

Some of those subscriptions come from a single subscriber, however, either directly or through the Disney Bundle which include all three services.

The company will also be testing a new premium release model with “Mulan”, which will be coming to the service in September. Unlike other content on Disney+, it will be available to subscribers for $29.99.

With the success of Disney+, and the decision to delay an International roll-out of Hulu, Disney does have an International streaming service plan for next year. Chapek said that they will launching a new international streaming service in 2021 under the “Star”-brand, that unlike Hulu will have exclusively owned content.

In April, Disney announced the company had surpassed 50 million paid subscribers globally, following their launch in India and eight Western European countries (UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Switzerland).

Of the 50 million subscribers, approximately eight million of those come from their existing Hotstar service, which was rebranded Disney+ Hotstar for their April 3 launch. Between March 28th and April 8th, the company added 8.5 million subscribers outside of India.

Fellow competitor Netflix recently announced they reached 193 million subscribers in the second quarter, up 10 million from the 183 million subscribers they reached back in Q1 2020.
