Everything You Need to Know About Disney+, Disney’s Streaming Service, Which is Launching in November for Only $6.99 a Month

At today’s Disney Investor Day, Disney revealed everything from the pricing to the release date—and a demo—of their upcoming streaming service Disney+. We’ll go through every show, movie, and series that will be released by Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and National Geographic on Disney+.

Disney+ Pricing & Release Date

Disney unveiled that their ad-free streaming service will debut in the U.S. on November 12, 2019 at $6.99 per month, or $70 per year ($5.83/month). Disney+, which many have dubbed a “Netflix-killer”, will expand international to Europe, Asia, and Latin America starting early next year and continuing through the end of 2020.

Disney+ Supported Devices & Apps

The service will be available on most major platforms at launch including streaming players like Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Smart TVs, video game consoles (like Xbox, PS4, and Nintendo Switch), as well as iOS, Android, and computers. On mobile devices and tablets, you will be to download shows and movies, so you can watch on the go.

On top of the Disney+ app, there is a carousel of featured content, with animated tiles for each of Disney’s properties below. Tapping on a tile takes you to an exclusive experience designed for that content, like Pixar or Marvel. When you’re in an individual section, you can see featured shows and movies, as well as personalized recommendations based on your watch history.

Within the app sidebar, you can quickly access every series or movie on the platform, as well as a watchlist which includes shows that you haven’t quite gotten to yet. Each account will let you create profiles for the different members of your household. You can choose an avatar from some of your favorite Disney characters like Woody from Toy Story.

Disney+ Movies & Shows

The first year will include 25 new original series, 10+ movies, 7,500 past episodes, 100 recent movies, and 400 library titles including the entire Disney Vault. The company announced 6 original shows and movies that will be available at launch, including the $100 million 10-episode Star Wars spin-off, “The Mandalorian” which was directed by Jon Favreau.

Disney+ Upcoming Original Shows/Films

Starting with the 2019 theatrical slate, all Disney/Pixar/Marvel/Star Wars films will become exclusive to Disney+ meaning movies like the live-action versions of Aladdin, The Lion King, Captain Marvel, and Avengers: Endgame will only be available to stream on Disney+.

Disney Animation

The entire collection of Disney Classic films, which traditionally were in the Disney Vault will be available when the service launches in November. This includes films like Aladdin, Bambi, Beauty & the Beast, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. More recent Disney animated films like Frozen, Big Hero 6, and Moana will also be available on launch day.

Frozen 2 which will be released in late-November, will join the service in summer 2020. Disney+ will be creating an original documentary called Into the Unknown which follows the creation of Frozen 2 from idea to release.

Disney Live-Action

Many of Disney’s live action films like Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beat, Christopher Robin, The Mighty Ducks, Newsies, National Treasure, and Remember the Titans will join the service in the first year.

The recently released remake of Mary Poppins will be available when the service debuts in November.

Walt Disney Studios will also make original films for the service like holiday comedy Noelle, which follows Anna Kendrick as Santa’s daughter. They will also be making a film called Timmy Failure based on the book series of a kid running the best detective agency in town.

Other Disney+ exclusive live-action films include Stargirl with Grace VanderWaal and Togo starring Willem Dafoe based on a true life adventure in the Alaska tundra.

But the most anticipated film is the live-action remake of Lady and the Tramp which will be available to stream when the service launches in November.

Pixar

At launch, 18 of 21 Pixar films will be available to stream on Disney+. The missing Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and CoCo will all be coming within the first year.

Pixar is also creating three Disney+ exclusives, including a TV series based on Monsters, Inc. called Monsters at Work. When the series comes in 2020 we’ll see Billy Crystal and John Goodman reprise their title roles.

Pixar will also be crating a film called Lamp Life which stars Bo Peep which takes place between Toy Story 2, where she first appeared, and the latest movie, Toy Story 4.

In Forky Asks a Question, the animated character will try to answer life toughest questions, like “What is cheese?”

Star Wars

Disney also shared that they had secured the rights to all six films from the two original trilogies, which will be available when the service launched in November. The remaining three films, and other films in the Star Wars universe, like Rogue One and Solo, will join the service within its first year.

In addition to The Mandalorian, they will also be creating a new show around Cassian Andor and Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO, which has yet to start shooting.

Marvel

The first new-release film on Disney+ will be Captain Marvel with Brie Larsen, which will be available when the service launches in November. Over the course of the first year, Iron Man, Thor, Antman and the Wasp, The Avengers, Black Panther, and Gardians of the Galaxy will all join the service. The yet to be released, but highly anticipated Avengers: Endgame will also be on the service by Summer 2020.

Marvel will also be creating four original series for Disney+ including WandaVision starring Emily Olson and Paul Bettany. They will also be releasing Loki starring Tom Hiddleston from the Thor universe, and another series called Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

They will also be creating a show called What If, which asks hypotheticals from the Marvel Universe like “What if Captain America never got his strength?”

Disney Channel

Disney Channel will be large contributor of content at launch with 5,000 episodes and 100 movies available when the service launches. This will include Duck Tales, Hannah Montana, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, High School Musical, Lizzy McGuire, and Thats So Raven.

The Disney Channel team will also be making Phineas & Ferb: The Movie, while bringing all 127 episodes from the series at launch. They will also be creating an exclusive show called High School Musical: The Musical - The Series. The series follows kids at a high school, who are putting on the original High School Musical at their school.

The Simpsons

In a surprise announcement, Disney+ will become the exclusive home of The Simpsons, with the entire library of 30 seasons available at launch. The series was previously on the now Disney-owned Hulu, but moved to FXX last year—which Disney acquired in their purchase of 21st Century Fox. It was expected that Disney might move the series back to Hulu after the acquisition closed, but instead it will be coming to Disney+.

National Geographic

National Geographic will be moving their films like Academy Award-winner Free Solo to Disney+. Additionally, they will bring their library of original shows like Brain Games, Gordan Ramsey: Uncharted, and Dog Whisper to Disney+.

The network will be creating two original series including The World According to Jeff Goldblum which will be available in November, and The Magic of The Animal Kingdom. The latter follows behind the scenes of the veterinary work at Animal Kingdom and the Epcot Aquarium.
