Facebook Launches New Streaming Device, Portal TV

Today, Facebook revealed new models of its Portal devices and among them were Portal TV, a set top device that allows for streaming as well as smart video-calling. With Portal TV, users can stream content from Facebook, Amazon Prime, SHOWTIME, CBS All Access, Starz, Pluto TV, and Red Bull TV. It also allows you to listen to music from Spotify, Pandora, and iHeartRadio.

Notably missing from the pack is Netflix and the upcoming Disney+, which VP of consumer hardware, Andrew Bosworth attributes to “people still learning about it,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rumors about Portal TV first came out back in July. At the time, the device was code named Catalina and reports were saying the social media network had approached Netflix, Disney, Hulu, HBO and Amazon about putting their streaming services on a new Facebook device for making video calls from televisions.

Facebook also previously announced their plans to venture into the SVOD space, beginning with a small scale experiment to sell their U.S. users streaming video. The plan is to convert a users who already consume video and other content for free, into paying customers.

Portal TV is now for sale in the US and Canada starting at $149 USD.
