Netflix has announced two deals for upcoming movies.
The first, the superhero flick “Ball and Chain,” stars Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins”) and Dwayne Johnson (“Jumanji: The Next Level”). The premise is of the rom-com variety. Both husband and wife have superpowers — but they spring into action when they are together.
Based on the 1990s comic by Scott Lobdell, Emily V. Gordon, Oscar-nominated for “The Big Sick,” is the scriptwriter. Johnson and Blunt will co-produce.
Blunt will next be seen in “A Quiet Place Part II,” directed by her husband John Krasinski (“The Office”), and slated to debut later this year. She is currently in post-production on “Wild Mountain Thyme.”
Johnson is also in production on Netflix’s “Red Notice” with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. On May 25, he will host “The Titan Games” on NBC.
Separately, Mark Wahlberg landed a seven-figure deal at Netflix for “Our Man From Jersey.” He’s been positioned as a blue-collar secret agent.
David Guggenheim (“Safe House”) will write the action-adventure movie. He is also the creator of “Designated Survivor,” which moved to Netflix after its ABC run. It stars Kiefer Sutherland, who also headlines “The Fugitive” remake for Quibi.
Wahlberg’s deal is an ongoing alliance with Netflix. He and producer Stephen Levinson also produced “Spenser Confidential” for the streamer.
Deadline first reported the Wahlberg news.
