Slingplayer App Has Been Removed From Roku Devices

One of the earliest ways to stream your channels from anywhere was with a Slingbox. The hardware device, along with the associated Slingplayer app, enabled streamers could watch live TV on their phones, tablets, Mac, and PC. Sling Media, which was acquired by Dish in 2007, released Slingplayer for Roku in 2013, which allowed streaming on the connected TV device.

After six years though, the app has been removed from the Roku platform. According to Dish, the most recent Roku firmware update is not compatible with the Slingplayer app, which means that the Slingplayer app will no longer be supported on any Roku device. The app has been removed completely, meaning that even if you’ve already downloaded it, it will no longer work.

Dish confirmed to us that the Slingplayer app will continue to work on Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast, iOS, Android, as well as web and desktop platforms. This also has no impact on Sling TV, which will continue to work on Roku devices — which just shares a name with its predecessor.
