Emmy Rossum, Martin Freeman and Alex Karpovsky to Star in Peacock’s ‘Angelyne’ Series

“Angelyne,” one of the scripted series for NBCU’s upcoming streamer Peacock, has announced its lead cast.

They include Martin Freeman (“Black Panther,” “Sherlock”), “Girls” star Alex Karpovsky and Emmy Rossum (“Shameless”), who plays the title role, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

In fact, the “Angelyne” show is based on a 2017 Hollywood Reporter story by Gary Baum. The article focused on a pretty blonde now seen as a precursor to Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian. Known as Angelyne, she was often spotted in exaggerated sexy poses on LA billboards and cruising the city in a signature pink Corvette in the 1980s and 1990s.

The series, which addresses issues of identity and Hollywood’s obsession with fame, is the first TV adaptation from any THR article.

In real life, the allusive blonde, who became, in modern parlance, famous for being famous, was Renee Goldberg. She was born in 1950 in Poland in a displaced-persons camp, the daughter of Holocaust survivors. Goldberg had endured a turbulent childhood and reinvented herself as an adult.

Freeman will portray the owner of a printing company who partners with Angelyne on her early billboard campaigns. Karpovsky’s character is based on the journalist who discovered Angelyne’s true identity.

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, is set to launch on April 15 for subscribers to Comcast’s Xfinity service and July 15 to the larger public.

Seth MacFarlane of “Family Guy” is also creating content for Peacock. He signed a reported $200 million deal with NBCU, which included the streamer, in January.
