Google & Amazon Officially End Feud, As YouTube Officially Returns to Amazon Fire TV, Prime Video to Android TV

Earlier this year, Google and Amazon brought an end to their feud, which saw YouTube pulled from Fire TV devices and Prime Video removed from being used with Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices. At the time, they announced that the YouTube App would become available in the next few months. The companies have announced that the official YouTube App for Fire TV devices will be available starting today.

The app will be available on Fire TV Stick (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV Stick Basic Edition, and Toshiba, Insignia, Element, and Westinghouse Fire TV Edition smart TV.

If you are unable to download, it is expected to roll-out to users over the course of the day. In addition, Google will also release YouTube TV and YouTube Kids apps for Fire TV devices later this year.

The Prime Video app will also now be supported on Android TV, Chromecast, and Chromecast built-in devices, joining already supported Android TV devices like NVIDIA SHIELD. Customers will be able to stream Amazon Originals like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, as well as the ability to subscribe to Prime Video Channels like Showtime, HBO, and CBS All Access.

This ends an on-going battle between the two tech companies. In late 2015, Amazon stopped selling Chromecast devices since there wasn’t a direct way to watch Prime Video content. In retaliation, Google removed YouTube from Fire TV and Echo devices. In December, Amazon began selling Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra devices.

The YouTube app is full featured and include the ability to sign-in to YouTube, access to your full library of content, and play videos in 4K HDR at 60 fps on supported devices. You can also use Alexa to open the app, control videos like play, fast-forward and rewind, or use commands like:

  • “Alexa, watch music videos on YouTube”
  • “Alexa, play MLB highlights”
  • “Alexa, find movie trailers.”
