HBO is offering viewers an amazing deal — but for a limited time.
Through April 30, the cabler is streaming its acclaimed TV shows, such as “Barry,” “Veep” and “Succession” free, per Variety. After that date, its content library goes behind a paywall.
In addition to award-winning series, there are 20 Warner Bros films, such as “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part 2,” as well as numerous movie genres available. “Alien,” “Empire of the Sun,” “Bridges of Madison County,” “I Love You Phillip Morris,” are among the titles on hand.
Ten HBO documentaries, including “Elvis Presley: The Searcher” and “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” are part of the package.
The trade magazine calls it “the biggest single content giveaway in its history,” while the cabler said the goal was to “provide some entertainment relief for those doing their part to keep everyone safe and healthy in this time of social isolation.”
However, there is a strategy behind the generosity: HBO Max debuts May 27, and it’s good business to attract viewers with valued inventory. The network is hoping viewers will like what they see and sign up for future programs. HBO Max opens with 10,000 hours of shows.
Other streamers have also offered free trials; Amazon has added free kids shows to the mix.
The full HBO programming line-up till April 30 is here. Free content is available on HBO Now, HBO Go, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon.
