About ‘Space Launch Live: Shatner in Space’

The launch of William Shatner on board Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket has been highly anticipated since its announcement. At the age of 90, he will become the oldest person to fly in space.

The mission, dubbed NS-18, will be the second crewed spaceflight for Blue Origin. Its first crewed mission was launched with the company’s founder, Jeff Bezos and three other passengers from Blue Origin’s West Texas mission site in July. Like the July mission, NS-18 will take Shatner and his fellow astronauts on a 10-minute spaceflight.

Blue Origin is one of three privately-owned companies sending persons into space. While Blue Origin has only launched one other short manned mission into space, the other two — SpaceX and Virgin Galactic — have launched several other space flights. Virgin Galactic has sent manned test flights of its current platform into space since 2018, along with one other passenger flight, earlier this year. SpaceX has flown crewed missions since August 2020, including two missions to the International Space Station.

Shatner is currently the host and executive producer of The UnXplained on History. From the producers of Ancient Aliens and The Curse of Oak Island, the one-hour, non-fiction series explores the world’s most fascinating, strange and inexplicable mysteries.
