With the coronavirus having put the kibosh on many live events, the Indy 500 is finally making its comeback nearly three months after its originally planned date. The event takes place on Sunday at the renowned Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Coverage begins at 1 p.m. ET on NBC, but the green flag doesn’t go down until 2:30 p.m. ET.

As with many events, the Indy 500 has had to scale back much of the hoopla that attracts fans each year. Not only will the race take place with the 230,000-seat grandstands vacant, but all major events leading up to the Indy 500 are cancelled, according to the Associated Press.
The Last Row Party, a charity event held each year roasting the three slowest qualifiers is off the table, along with the Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade, which typically takes place on Saturdays. The staple Purdue University All-American Marching Band — which has been the host band of the Indy 500 since 1927 — will also be absent this year.
“We’re all taking different stock of the things we do professionally and personally and the chance to sit right there on the track with Danica Patrick and have the 33 cars behind us and the 300,00 people behind us is one of the coolest experiences I’ve had. We’ll miss those fans incredibly,” stated NBC sportscaster, Mike Tirico. “But the Indy 500 is the Indy 500 and there’s never been one like this year. So I’m looking forward to documenting that history and sharing it with the fans at home.”
