Netflix Signs Production Deal With ‘Game of Thrones’ Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

Famed Games of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed a multi-year deal production deal with Netflix. The deal, will have Benioff and Weiss write, produce and direct new series and films exclusively at Netflix.

The agreement came after an intense bidding war as Amazon, Disney and WarnerMedia were all also vying for the duo. A shared creative sensibility with the team at Netflix won the pair over, according to their statement.

“Over the past few months, we’ve spent many hours talking to Cindy Holland and Peter Friedlander, as well as Ted Sarandos and Scott Stuber,” the statement read. “We remember the same shots from the same ‘80s movies; we love the same books; we’re excited about the same storytelling possibilities. Netflix has built something astounding and unprecedented, and we’re honored they’ve invited us to join them.”

Benioff and Weiss follow the lead of other A-list writers-producers who’ve found a new home at Netflix. Shonda Rhimes and Kenya Barris, both left ABC in 2018, and Ryan Murphy, also left Fox the same year.

It seems Benioff and Weiss’ upcoming controversial drama at HBO, Confederate, is now on the back burner as president of programming Casey Bloys recently told Deadline it would be unlikely that projects Weiss and Benioff developed for HBO would continue if they signed a deal elsewhere.
