Netflix Taps Sandra Oh to Head ‘The Chair,’ Renews ‘Atypical’ for Fourth and Final Season
Sandra Oh has been cast in “The Chair,” a new Netflix dramedy. The show is written by playwright and actress Amanda Peet and is set in an English department at a major university, reports Variety.
Oh (“Killing Eve”) will head a six-episode series with “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as executive producers. The pair has a hefty five-year $250 million deal with Netflix.
As an actress, Peet has starred in “Saving Silverman” and “The Whole Nine Years,” but she’s also established herself as a playwright. Peet wrote the off-Broadway drama “The Commons of Pensacola,” which centers on a disgraced wife after her husband’s massive Wall Street scam, think Ruth Madoff and “Our Very Own Carlin McCullough.”
For “The Chair,” Peet will also serve as showrunner.
Oh hasn’t ended her “Killing Eve” tenure. The BBC America-AMC spy drama, which airs on Hulu, has been renewed for a fourth season ahead of its upcoming third season premiere, on April 10.
Another critically acclaimed Netflix show, “Atypical,” been renewed for a fourth and final 10-episode season premiering in 2021. The Peabody Award-nominated family centers on Sam, a teen on the autism spectrum. Last season, Sam (Kier Gilchrist) was a freshman in college. And while he navigates what it means to be independent, his family copes with changes in their own lives.
The series, created-executive produced by Robia Rashid, also stars Jennifer Jason Leigh, Michael Rapaport and Brigette Lundy-Paine.
“It’s my hope that the legacy of ‘Atypical’ is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view,” Rashid stated.
