Netflix Testing a New, Low-Cost Subscription Tier in India

To attract more subscribers in India, Asia’s third-largest economy, Netflix is testing a new, low-cost subscription tier, per TechCrunch.

The Mobile+ plan, geared to both new and current subscribers, delivers HD streaming quality cross-platform — mobile, tablet and computer — but not on TV.

The monthly price is 349 Indian rupees ($4.70).

The testing of the new tier follows the streamer’s mobile-only plan in India, which costs 199 Indian rupees ($2.70). Conversely, the traditional monthly sub with standard definition starts at 499 Indian rupees ($6.69). The highest plan, 799 Indian rupees ($10.70), supports four simultaneous views and streaming in ultra HD (4K).

Netflix stated: “We launched the Mobile Plan in India to make it easier for anyone with a smartphone to enjoy Netflix. We want to see if members like the added choice this offer brings. We’ll only roll it out long-term if they do.”

In India, Netflix competes with various rivals, including Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and Apple TV+.

Last December, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said the company would spend $420.5 million on producing and licensing content in India through 2020.
