Peacock Garners 1.5 Million Downloads in First Six Days After National Launch

It seems Peacock is off to a good start as the streaming service managed to lure in watchers with its national launch. According to TechCrunch, a report by app store intelligence firm Sensor Tower revealed the service amassed 1.5 million app downloads across the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the U.S., within its first six days post-launch.

This is 25 percent more than the 1.2 million downloads Quibi garnered over the same period post-launch in the U.S., but makes up a mere 12 percent of the 13 million downloads Disney+ received within the same time. Sensor Tower attributed the gap with Disney+ to the fact that the latter has strong brand-name recognition, while the name Peacock doesn’t instantly link the service to NBC for customers. Disney+ also had an advantage in that the market was lacking a huge family-friendly streamer.

WarnerMedia’s HBO Max was excluded in comparison due to the fact that it replaced the HBO Now app, which was already on millions of homes.

“Before last week’s launch, Peacock had been available on parent company Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex platforms, but that didn’t include its mobile companion. The mobile app instead officially launched on July 15, and quickly shot up to No. 1 on the iPhone App Store, where it remained through the following day. On iPad, it ranked No. 1 between July 16 and July 18,” TechCrunch reported.

As of July 21, the app had dropped to no. 26 on iPhone (among nongame apps) and was at no. 2 in the Google Play Store since July 17 and no. 1 among nongame apps.

Peacock launched nationally on July 15. The streamer includes a free tier featuring more than 13,000 hours of movies and shows. The service also offers Peacock Premium, which includes 20,000 hours of movies and shows, for $4.99 per month, as well as an ad-free tier for $9.99.
