Twitch to Stream 2 Olympique de Marseille Friendly Matches
Amazon-owned online streaming platform Twitch will stream two of the French Ligue 1’s Olympique de Marseille games this month.
According to Sports Business, the platform will broadcast Marseille’s match with Austrian third-tier outfit FC Pinzgau Saalfelden on July 19, and then another one against German fourth-tier side SV Heimstetten on July 22. Both matches will be available on Marseille’s Twitch channel.
This is Amazon’s latest foray into the world of soccer. Last month, Amazon announced they will livestream Premier League games for free on Twitch in the UK in an effort to keep soccer fans engaged during the game. Amazon was banking on Twitch’s chat feature, which allows game watchers to “behave like pundits” and share their perspectives on the match in real time. This will also mark the first time Twitch is used to stream the Premier League since Amazon bought it back in 2014.
Prior to that, the e-commerce giant had snagged rights to livestream four English Premier League games for free in the UK when the season resumed last month. As an added bonus, the company made the games available to everyone, so fans didn’t need to be Prime Video members in order to watch.
Amazon first began its partnership with the English Premier League last year and broadcast two games in the UK over this past Christmas season. In the UK, matches will be broadcast across Sky, BT Sport, the BBC and Amazon and air on NBC, CNBC and NBCSN in the U.S.
